The current global situation with COVID-19 has created enormous upheaval. The number one priority is keeping people safe and protecting vulnerable communities. With social distancing being implemented around the world, non-essential business has been shut down, and with it the livelihoods of so many.

With exhibitions and galleries closed, Design Magpie is working to bring more artists on-board to promote their work.

As things currently stand, our print suppliers are open for business, meaning we can continue to bring you unique locally produced content.

So, why not brighten up your house with an art print that supports local artists – or send your friends a message on our greeting card range.

Artists who are interested in publishing with Design Magpie, please contact us to discuss options.

Design Magpie Halloween Will o' the Wisp

All Hallows Eve

Design draws inspiration from various places. It is always better if we are fully informed, be it tangental or direct. When starting some projects you don’t know where they will end up. Solving a brief in a creative way will always lead us on various paths before a final convergence or elimination providing the solution.

Looking at Halloween has been a fascinating tangent. Halloween is not something that we in Australia have as a cultural ‘thing’. Despite importing various cultural practices from Great Britain, this is not one. We see a lot more halloween influences as the cultural import from America increases.

The jack-o-lantern which has become synonymous with halloween, was originally known as a will o’ the wisp in the UK. The tale of these ghostly lights has been told around the world. Observed in Canada, America, India, Thailand, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Italy, the United Kingdom and Australia all with varying degrees of sinister lore to accompany them.

A will ‘o the wisp is a glowing light seen over marshy swamp land. Often believed to lure travellers to demise, through malevolence or mischief. In Australia we have in the outback the phenomenon of the Min Min light. A glowing orb that appears to follow travellers, always out of reach.

It has been fascinating to see how linked and similar around the world stories and lore can be. No one really knows what exactly causes will o’ the wisp’s, making them intriguing and just a little bit spooky – happy halloween!

Design Magpie Past-present

From 2009 to present

October 4, 2018

You may notice in our logo we have been established since 2009 yet our content is all recent.

Many things have changed since Design Magpie’s inception. Originally started as a retail outlet for books that had been designed at KRD, we had great plans for creating a whole range of beautifully designed items. This hasn’t changed. The difference now is our ability to deliver high-quality items with limited print runs. On-demand digital printing was in its infancy back in 2009, it could be done, but the quality wasn’t there. Digital print was obviously digital print. This has transformed dramatically.

The quality produced with new digital presses is now almost indistinguishable from offset print. And the range of specialty finishes–metallic inks, spot varnish or colours, are now created with ease.

We no longer need large print runs of items, which means we don’t need storage space or inventory management. We can bring new designs to market with speed and quality, without large investment. It keeps a small side project lean and efficient, and frankly, viable.

We list our items as printed on demand, and with an average print turnaround time of 1-2 business days (depending on time order is placed) items can be despatched and in the mail to customers with upmost speed.

Our print partners are specialists, who have invested in technology and innovation. They are committed to be socially and environmentally responsible.

We look forward to offering a greater variety of paper stocks and specialty finishes as our range grows.
